QR Payment Apps in Nigeria: What to Check Before Choosing
Choose a QR payment app by checking who can pay your code, where the money arrives, what charges apply and how you confirm receipt. For a business, the right option should work for the customers you serve and give you clear payment records.
Start with the payments you need to make or receive. A QR feature is useful when the people on both sides can actually use it.
Are you paying or accepting payments?
As a customer, you need an app that supports the merchant’s QR. You also need to understand which account funds the payment and what you must check before authorising it.
As a merchant, you need to know which customers can pay, how to display your code and where to check incoming transactions.
Before choosing, answer these questions:
| If you are paying | If you are accepting payments |
|---|---|
| Does my app support this merchant’s code? | Which apps can customers use to pay my code? |
| Which account will the payment come from? | Where will the money arrive? |
| Can I check the recipient and amount? | Can I find the completed incoming transaction? |
| What fee and account limits apply? | What charges, transfer terms and limits apply? |
These questions are more useful than choosing an app simply because it advertises “scan to pay.”
Check which apps can pay the code
QR codes can look similar while working with different payment services.
Some services connect participating banking apps. Others require the payer and recipient to use a particular app. Check the provider’s current compatibility information before printing a code or asking customers to download anything.
For example, both people need GoTap to complete a GoTap QR payment. Do not assume that a customer’s banking app can pay a GoTap code.
Read how GoTap QR payments work.
If your customers regularly use a different payment method, keep a suitable alternative available.
Understand where the money arrives
Ask whether customer payments arrive in a bank account, a payment wallet or another balance provided by the service.
Then check what happens if you want to move that money elsewhere:
- Is a separate transfer required?
- What charges apply?
- What limits affect the account?
- What transfer or settlement terms does the provider show?
Record the customer payment separately from any later movement between your own accounts. Moving received money to your bank does not create another sale.
Check how amounts and orders are recorded
A reusable QR can be convenient at a counter. Customers scan the same code and follow the payment prompts.
Other services may offer payment requests prepared for individual purchases. Depending on the provider, those requests can include an amount or reference.
Check what the app actually supports. A QR payment feature does not automatically include inventory, order tracking, invoicing or customer management.
For example, a tailor accepting deposits still needs to connect each confirmed payment to the right order and outstanding balance.
Review charges, requirements and support
Before relying on an app for business payments, check:
- Supported phones and current operating-system requirements.
- Account setup and verification requirements.
- Payment, receiving and withdrawal charges where applicable.
- Transaction and account limits.
- How to report an unresolved payment.
- What information support needs to investigate it.
Use the terms displayed for your account. Avoid assuming that a charge or limit mentioned in an old post still applies.
Know how you will confirm receipt
For each customer payment, find the completed incoming transaction in your own receiving account. Compare the amount and available identifying details with the order.
A customer’s screenshot can help you investigate. Use your own account record to establish that the business received the money.
If the customer was debited but receipt remains unclear, check the original attempt before requesting another payment.
Using GoTap’s business QR
In GoTap, switch to your merchant account, open Receive and choose QR Code. Check the displayed business name before showing or sharing it.
The customer scans with GoTap, reviews the payment details and authorises the payment. You then check receipt in your own business account.
Choose the payment option your customers can use, understand its terms and establish a clear way to check every receipt.
