Why Your Payment QR Code Won’t Scan—and How to Fix It

By GoTap3 min read

If a payment QR code will not scan, first check that you are using the right app. Then check lighting, camera focus, the condition of the code and the clear space around it.

If the code has already opened a payment screen, the scan has worked. A compatibility problem, connection error or pending payment needs a different fix.

First, identify where it stopped

These situations can look similar at a busy checkout, but they mean different things:

Payment QR problems and what to check
What you seeWhat to check
The scanner does not recognise the codeCamera access, lighting, focus and print quality
The code is recognised but cannot be used for paymentWhether the app supports that payment QR
The payment screen opens but cannot continueAccount readiness, connection and the message shown
You authorised payment but the result is unclearThe original transaction’s status before trying again

Knowing which stage failed prevents unnecessary retries.

Use the correct payment scanner

A general phone camera may recognise a QR code without being able to complete the payment it represents.

For a GoTap QR payment, use the scanner in GoTap. Both people need GoTap; do not assume that a banking app can pay a GoTap code.

If the scanner cannot access your camera, check the app’s camera permission in your phone settings.

Make the code easier for the camera to read

Start with a few simple adjustments:

  • Keep the entire code inside the scanning area.
  • Hold your phone steady and give it time to focus.
  • Move slightly closer or further away.
  • Improve the lighting without shining a reflection across the code.
  • Clean the camera lens with a soft cloth.
  • If scanning another screen, make sure its display is bright enough to read.

Google’s camera guidance recommends checking lighting, glare, lens cleanliness and distance when a QR code will not scan.

For a printed code, flatten any folds and check for faded ink, tears or marks across the pattern.

Check the original print or image

A code can become difficult to read if someone crops its clear border, stretches it or places a logo or text over important parts.

Replace a damaged print using the original image from the payment provider. Enlarging a blurry screenshot may produce a larger blurry code.

If the QR code is displayed on the same phone you are using to pay, you cannot point that phone’s camera at its own screen. Ask the merchant to show it on another device or printed sign, or agree on another supported payment method.

If the payment screen opens, check what it says

Once the app recognises the code and shows payment details, changing the print size will not resolve an account or connection problem.

Read the message shown. Check whether the recipient is supported, whether your account has completed any required setup, and whether your connection is working.

For GoTap’s requirements, see the QR payments guide.

If you already authorised payment, stop retrying

An unclear result is different from a failed scan.

Open your transaction history and check the original payment. The merchant should check their own incoming record too. Repeatedly scanning and authorising could create another payment.

Keep the transaction reference and contact your payment provider through its official support channel if the result remains unclear.
